Nelson Mandela said, “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.” When President Johnson’s “War on Poverty” began half a century ago here in the United States, it was widely seen as the moral obligation of a wealthy nation.
President Lyndon B. Johnson declared his “war on poverty” in his first State of the Union Address, fifty years ago. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the “war on poverty” which launched some of the nation’s landmark anti-poverty programs. The child poverty rate of today has not changed much since 1954. Research suggests that without the initiatives adopted over the past 50 years, it would be even worse. The U.S. has changed a lot in 50 years, so have the causes and nature of American’s poverty. Underprivileged children, from infancy through their adult life belong to the poorest segment of society in America today. For most parents, wages have been stagnant. It is sad that the U.S. Government has increasingly limited the amount of social welfare services, and funding available to the lower classes and the disabled. It is unfortunate that our present day methods of education fails to spark a desire to remain in school and motivate more of our underprivileged youths. This is born out by a major trend of knowledge-based economy that is leaving less-educated workers behind. We have gained more knowledge, and understanding of the serious and often lasting effects of poverty on children, but we as a society have done little to change or improve the circumstances. Seventy percent of low-income kids grow up to become low-income adults. Unfortunately, until now there have been no policies adopted to break that cycle.
